WATER WISE IN THE PINES

What is Water Wise in the Pines?

Water Wise in the Pines is an integrated demand management (aka water conservation) program geared towards Arizona Water Company customers in Munds Park, or Pinewood. This program includes the launch of the Water Wise in the Pines Facebook page, an evaluation of the current conservation efforts in the region, and the launch of unique initiatives geared towards encouraging a strong water conservation ethic in the communities.

The Water Wise in the Pines Facebook page is a public education campaign that will post content weekly to educate people in the area about where their water comes from, what is going on with water resources in the state, and what they can do to conserve water while still maintaining a desired quality of life. Content will be relevant to permanent residents of Munds Park, short term or seasonal residents, and visitors. This way, anyone in the community, regardless of their status, will be able to get value out of Water Wise in the Pines.

What type of information will this program provide?

Through the Facebook page, relevant information on water resources and conservation will be shared with the community. This program will also include a launch video to explain the program, a water journey video to educate the community on where their water comes from, and other video series to explain such topics as how snow impacts the aquifer, or how to read your meter.

Tips and actions catere to all sorts of people in Munds Park: permanent residents, temporary residents (perhaps with a second home in Munds Park), short-term renters, or visitors from all around. Everyone can learn something from Water Wise in the Pines!

Why is this program being launched now?

The State of Arizona is a leader in water conservation in the United States. There are numerous regulations affecting water use. AWC is regulated under nearly a dozen different water conservation regulations. While AWC has historically been implementing conservation measures at the local level, in 2020, AWC made a decision to develop and implement a comprehensive, company-wide program. This programming supports the development of custom localized programs, in collaboration with the communities AWC serves. To that end, AWC has been launching customized IDMPs for its communities since April 2021 when it launched its first of such programs in Casa Grande, AZ. Now, it’s Munds Park’s turn! For more information on launched programs, check out https://www.azwater.com/conservation/

AWC has been launching IDMPs because Arizona has been in a historic drought since 2000. A drought that is applicable statewide. Does this mean we will run out of water? No, but in a state like Arizona, everyone needs to do their part to conserve water.

What is Arizona Water Company doing to conserve water?

As a water utility in the area, it is important for Arizona Water Company to walk the walk, especially when it comes to water conservation. Here are just a few things the company does to conserve water through regulated tariffs.

– Special Events/Programs and Community Presentations Tariff: AWC staff are ready and willing to attend events with a booth or provide presentations on water-related topics for the Munds Park community. Presentations can cover general topics like water resources and water conservation, or they can cover specific topics like active versus passive rainwater harvesting or irrigation 101. Read more on this tariff here.

Want someone to come do a presentation or host a booth? Email [email protected] and AWC staff will coordinate with you!

– Water Waste Investigations and Information Tariff: This tariff requires AWC staff to investigate any water waste reported by the community, determine what the cause of the waste may be, and follow up with the entity at fault to help them resolve the issue. What constitutes water waste? Read the tariff here to find out.

– Leak Detection Program Tariff: AWC staff are constantly assessing local water system infrastructure to look for and fix leaks. As a proactive measure, they use specialized leak-detection equipment to routinely inspect lines for leaks. When a leak is found, it is prioritized for repair to keep lost water at a minimum.
